Calendula belongs to the Compositae plant family. The plant is native to southern Europe, and is cultivated in temperate regions around the world. During the medieval times it was traditionally used as a spice and natural colourant due to its yellowish colour. Calendula is one of the most well known and versatile herbs in Western herbal medicine.
